Sammy Kuffour wants Black Stars totally overhauled
The Champions League-winning defender insists the nation’s apathy towards youth development is the reason for the national team’s faltering fortunes.
Ghana once again failed to make any impact in the Africa Cup of Nations, having failed to book a place in the final after losing to Cameroon in the semi-finals. Avram Grant's team also lost their third place game Burkina Faso to place fourth in AFCON.
The Black Stars have always been close, yet so far from winning the coveted gold and Kuffour believes Ghana will achieve nothing if the team is not overhauled.
“It’s very difficult for us to come out with something. I think we need to go back and start the whole thing (rebuilding) again,” Kuffour said on Supersports.
“That is my view. Because if you want to achieve something, then we have to go back to where we belong. The youth [foundation] should be strong.
“Without the youth, there would be no Black Stars. Because Dede Ayew is from the youth [teams] and almost every player [in the Black Stars] developed from the youth. And now we don’t care about the youth.”
Ghana’s wait for a fifth Africa Cup of Nations will now stretch to at least 37 years – having last lifted the cup in 1982.
