“On the defamatory statements made against me personally, I intend to pursue the appropriate legal remedies,” he said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

Afenyo-Markin said the personal attacks against him were intended to shift attention from the financial questions he had raised about the programme.

“Over the past week, all manner of insults and personal attacks have been directed at me, apparently in an attempt to impugn my character and divert attention from the substantive questions I have raised,” he said.

His comments come on the back of a heated exchange between him and GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi over the reported financial cost of the DGPP.

The dispute intensified after Mr Afenyo-Markin demanded answers over a GH¢22 billion loss connected to the programme.

The Minority Leader cited an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report which said the scaling-up of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025 generated losses of more than US$1.7 billion.

GoldBod, however, has rejected the characterisation of the US$1.7 billion as a loss recorded by the institution. Mr Gyamfi has said GoldBod acted as a buying agent for the Bank of Ghana and was not responsible for the subsequent sale of the gold, the determination of selling prices or the negotiation of off-take agreements.

Mr Gyamfi has described Mr Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist” in connection with the Minority’s demands for answers over GoldBod. Mr Gyamfi challenged the Minority Leader to sue him if he believed the description was false.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has now indicated that he intends to take the matter to court, although he did not disclose the specific legal action he plans to pursue. In his statement, he noted that the attacks would not stop the Minority from pursuing the financial issues.
