Blue Jays rally to blitz Yankees, Dodgers and Rays win
Trailing 6-0 heading into the sixth inning, the Blue Jays finished strongly thanks to Russell Martin's two homers and his go-ahead shot in the eighth.
Edwin Encarnacion also homered as the Blue Jays reclaimed sole possession of first place in the American League (AL) East after the Baltimore Orioles lost 5-3 to the Boston Red Sox.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays both hit 15 runs in their respective wins.
Chase Utley's grand slam guided the Dodgers to a 15-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, while Brad Miller's two homers helped the Rays beat the San Diego Padres 15-1.
The Chicago Cubs enjoyed a pair of victories in their double-header against the Milwaukee Brewers, winning 4-0 and 4-1.
In other results, reigning World Series champions the Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-1, the Texas Rangers outlasted the Oakland Athletics 5-4, the Chicago White Sox lost 3-1 to the Cleveland Indians and the St Louis Cardinals were too good for the Houston Astros 8-5.
The Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 7-6, the Pittsburgh Pirates upstaged the San Francisco Giants 4-3, the Atlanta Braves fell 4-2 to the Minnesota Twins, the New York Mets posted a 7-5 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cincinnati Reds saw off the Miami Marlins 6-3, while the Washington Nationals were beaten 6-2 by the Colorado Rockies.
UTLEY STARS IN RETURN TO PHILADELPHIA
In his first game back at Citizens Bank Park since being traded to the Dodgers last August, Utley showed the Phillies what they are missing out on with a solo homer in the fifth inning and a grand slam in the seventh. Utley finished two-for-five with five runs driver in.
RIZZO SHOWS HIS SKILLS
No foul ball is safe when Anthony Rizzo is around.
ALTUVE BRINGS UP MILESTONE
Astros second baseman Jose Altuve went three-for-five with an RBI in the loss against the Cardinals. The third hit was the 1,000th hit of his career, making him the first Astros player to achieve that feat during his first six seasons. Altuve also raised his average to an astonishing .365 on the year.
RED SOX AND ORIOLES CLASH AGAIN
The AL East has four teams separated by just six and a half games and the Red Sox and Orioles are tied for second, one game back of the Blue Jays. David Price (10-8, 4.29 ERA) will take on Chris Tillman (15-4, 3.46 ERA) in a battle of team aces on Wednesday.
Yankees fans desperately want to believe their team is still in the playoff picture, but the season is winding down and the division is not getting any easier. Toronto's ageless wonder J.A. Happ (16-3, 2.96 ERA) will take the mound against CC Sabathia (7-9, 4.20 ERA) trying to extend the Blue Jays' modest division lead.
