The 24-year-old flyer??will undergo surgery and is expected to be sidelined for six months due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, which puts paid to his hopes of winning gold in Brazil.

All Blacks Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens told Radio Sport: "It wasn't good news, I can assure you,

"I would have loved to have kept my players right through from Wellington/Sydney to the completion of the World Series, because to be good at this game you've got to be playing it and training it consistently and you get to measure what the other teams have got as well.

"Losing Ben was devastating news but it is what it is and we just have to get on with it. But I??feel for Ben because I thought he had two particularly good tournaments in Wellington and Sydney.
