Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has criticised what he describes as a growing trend of public donations being used to divert attention from alleged corruption and questionable activities within government circles.

Speaking in a video shared online, the MP alleged that individuals involved in dubious schemes often resort to high-profile charitable acts to shape public perception and deflect scrutiny.

According to him, such acts are frequently presented as philanthropy to create the impression of generosity, while underlying concerns about accountability remain unresolved.

In Ghana, any time people engage in certain schemes, the next thing they do is what we call ‘adɔyɛ’, making donations—so people will say they are doing well, he stated.

Mr Shaib further argued that public attention is often shifted away from alleged wrongdoing once such donations are made, allowing individuals to cultivate reputations as philanthropists while avoiding critical questioning.

He explained that members of the Minority had raised concerns about transparency in certain operations, calling for clarity on the roles of key actors and the flow of funds in projects under scrutiny. According to him, questions were also raised about who benefits from contracts and whether decision-making processes favour associates or affiliates.

The MP also expressed concern about the environmental impact of certain activities, alleging that water bodies have been severely polluted, with consequences for surrounding communities and infrastructure.

He cited the deteriorating condition of water sources and possible damage to equipment linked to water systems, warning that environmental degradation could have long-term effects if not addressed.

MP Jerry Ahmed Shaib maintained that the Minority’s position has been centred on demanding transparency, accountability and assurances that government-related activities are conducted in accordance with established regulations.
