It came as no surprise, but with the post-season officially out of reach, the Dallas Cowboys placed injured quarterback Tony Romo on season-ending injured reserve on Friday.

Practice squad QB Jameill Showers was promoted to Dallas' active roster.

Romo, 35, was placed on the Cowboys' injured reserve-designated to return list after suffering a broken left collarbone in week two against the Philadelphia Eagles.

After returning from the injury in week 11 and leading his team to a win over the Miami Dolphins, he sustained a hairline fracture in the healed portion of the break during a loss to the Carolina Panthers.

The Cowboys (4-10) were eliminated for play-off contention on December 19 after a 19-16 loss to the New York Jets.
