Australia batsman Shaun Marsh has been called into the 13-man squad for the third Test against New Zealand, replacing the injured Usman Khawaja.

Khawaja (hamstring) will miss the historic day-night Adelaide Test and is likely to be absent for the first clash against West Indies.

Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson and Stephen O'Keefe have been added to the squad, with the retired Mitchell Johnson also out of the team.

"Shaun was unlucky to miss out on the squad for the first two Tests and since then has scored consistently in Sheffield Shield, so we believe he deserves this opportunity," national selector Rod Marsh said.

Pattinson's inclusion leaves him competing with fellow Victorian Peter Siddle for a spot in the bowling attack, to join Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Marsh.

Rod Marsh said Pattinson was ready for Test cricket, while Siddle has been 12th man for the first two Tests of the series " which Australia lead 1-0.

"James has made a good return to Shield cricket following his injury and has earned this re-call," he said.

"He has worked incredibly hard and we are confident that he is ready to perform at Test level if selected."
