Chicago Cubs star Jake Arrieta believes he is worth more than Stephen Strasburg in light of the Washington Nationals ace's lucrative contract extension.

Strasburg signed a seven-year, $175million extension on Tuesday, but reigning MLB Cy Young award winner Arrieta feels he warrants an even bigger pay-package.

Speaking to reporters before the Cubs lost 7-4 to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, 30-year-old Arrieta was asked about the market and he said: "I'll let you judge that.

"Just look at the numbers."

Arrieta, who has a year remaining on his contract before he is eligible to become a free agent following the 2017 season, added: "Financially I'm fine, regardless. You want to be paid in respect to how your peers are paid.

"I don't think that changes with any guy you ask. It happens around baseball every year."

Arrieta is off to a 6-0 start in the MLB this season, with a 1.13 ERA and 44 strikeouts.
