Phil Taylor has rubbished suggestions he could bring an end to his glittering career following his early exit from the PDC World Darts Championship.

The sixteen-time world champion was knocked out in the third round at Alexandra Palace on Thursday, courtesy of a 5-4 defeat to Jelle Klaasen.

That loss prompted Taylor's long-time friend and adversary Raymond van Barneveld to suggest darts' most successful player "wants to retire".

"I think Phil is really tired. I'm watching Phil for the last month and I think it's getting to him now," said Van Barneveld.

However, Taylor subsequently took to Twitter to make it clear he has no intention of walking away.

The 55-year-old posted: "2016 not retiring gonna work hard to come back stronger with @Bobglenn180 @TargetDarts @Garryplummer # not finished."

Taylor has come up short in five of his last six attempts to claim the PDC crown - although he did reach last year's final before losing to Gary Anderson.
