Sudanese students protest against hike in price of bread

Anti-riot police fired tear gas at protesters and blocked hundreds of students from leaving the campus of the University of Khartoum.

Protesters were seen burning tyres and blocking roads in Khartoum and areas of Darfur and Blue Nile states over soaring bread prices.

Bread prices increased after the cost of flour surged to 450 Sudanese pounds ($25) for a 50kg sack from 167 pounds.

Security authorities have said that violent protests from students will be met with force.

Economists have stated that the recent increase in price is in compliance with an IMF recommendation, which is expected to help solve the country’s ailing economy.

The decision to increase the price of bread is part of the government's response to IMF recommendations on how to improve the ailing economy.
