Irina Falconi wins Claro Open Colsanitas
Irina Falconi won her first WTA title by beating Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the final of the Claro Open Colsanitas on Sunday.
Fifth seed Falconi had never played in a WTA final before this week, but beat Lara Arruabarrena at the semi-final stage to set up a showdown with Soler-Espinosa.
Ecuador-born American Falconi rose to the occasion on the clay in Bogota, prevailing 6-2 2-6 6-4 to end her wait for a victory at tour level.
The unseeded Soler-Espinosa struggled on serve, racking up seven double faults and suffering defeat despite saving 11 break points.
World number 92 Falconi saved three break points in the first game of the match before digging deep to hold and moved into a 5-1 lead as she took the opening set in impressive fashion.
Soler-Espinosa, ranked 170th in the world, hit back in the second by opening up a 4-0 lead before going on to set up a decider.
Falconi was a break down in the final set at 4-3, but responded by winning three games in a row to be crowned champion.
