Relations between Ghana and The Gambia was at it all time low in 2008 following the death and disappearance of of some Ghanaian nationals in Gambia in 2005.

Akufo-Addo was then Ghana's Foreign Minister and he was heavily criticised by then candidate John Evans Atta Mills in the led up to the 2008 elections for doing little to hold the Gambia government responsible.

Mr Jammeh's denied the role of Gambia's security forces in the death of the Ghanaians.
