According to a Reuters report on August 20, the cedi was expected to slide against the US dollar in the week ahead as corporate demand for foreign currency continued to outpace supply.

LSEG data cited by Reuters showed the cedi trading at GH¢11.00 to the dollar, compared with GH¢10.90 a week earlier.

Ronald Mensah, a trader at Stanbic Bank Ghana, said the cedi had come under renewed pressure from dollar demand from both local corporates and offshore players.

“We expect dollar liquidity to stay thin, with the central bank's spot auctions still the main source of supply,” he said.

Another trader cited by the report said the results of the latest Bank of Ghana foreign exchange auction pointed to a build-up in dollar demand, with bids reaching $399 million against an allocation of $125 million.

The development will be closely watched by businesses, importers, travellers and other market participants as demand for foreign currency remains elevated.
