Veep promises scholarship for 5,000 students

Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has stressed governments commitment of increasing scholarships given to some needy Senior High School (SHS) students from 2,000 to 5,000.

According to him, government provided scholarships to 2,000 SHS students in the 2014/15 academic year and plans to increase the scheme in the next academic year.

He announced this at the Presidential Independence Day Awards ceremony in Accra on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

He noted that under the secondary education improvement project, scholarships are provided for the needy to enable them acquire learning materials.

Mr Amissah-Arthur said government had rolled out several interventions to improve education, including the disbursement of GHS12.2 million to absorb the fees of over 320,000 students.

The vice president added that  science education remained a priority for government and 1,500 teachers had benefited from enhanced technology in teaching science and mathematics, aimed at improving teaching and learning of those subjects.
