People aren't just taking conventional vacations such as road trips anymore. If a cruise vacation is on your mind, you have to know how to pack adequately.

Packing for a cruise vacation is not an easy task, especially for first-timers because there are too many variables to consider. Not only do you have to consider the many activities on board the ship; dining, shows, events, swimming and so on, but you also have to consider day at port, excursions and weather changes.

It isn’t just enough to pack as sparingly as possible, careful planning and though must be given to how you go about it. Here are some tips:

1. Consider the limited space.

You will a very limited amount of drawer space and the bathrooms will be very small (it is a ship, not a duplex). There is little or no space to leave out your accessories and belongings. A small travel cosmetic case should be ideal for this situation.

2. Clothing.

You will want to bring casual, comfortable pieces of clothing to wear during the day-time on board and in port. You also need swimsuits, cover-ups, sleep wear and probably workout clothes if you intend to use the on board fitness center. Consider any excursions you may have planned and pack additional needs such as ponchos, hiking boots, rain gear, insect repellent, light jackets and so on.

As for shipboard dining and evening wear, there is a trick you can apply. Give thought to putting together a few basic pieces you can mix and match to create several outfits out of fewer pieces.

A great black skirt, a pair of black pants combined with different tops, shirts and cover-ups can make your packing a lot easier.

3. Shoes.

You may need walking shoes for excursions, sandals/flip flops and dress shoes. We suggest that you bring as few pairs as possible.

4. Laundry.

One good thing is there is often an on board laundry room so that should help minimize your packing as well. Be sure to read about your ship and its amenities.

5. Electricity.

Note that most ships have 110-volt cabin outlets. You should also check the website of your specific cruise properly to be sure of what other small appliances may be available in your cabin. Some ships already have installed hairdryers and such in cabin baths, and also have irons for passenger use in the laundry areas.

Finally, avoid packing too much. In fact, you don’t need to pack a lot of things. Chances are you won’t make use of most of the things you pack. Relax and enjoy your trip and also remember that you will be bringing home a lot of souvenirs and treasures and they have to fit somewhere.
