Mahama Ayariga confirms Millicent Amankwah Yeboah as his wife at Parliamentary vetting

• Mahama Ayariga, the outgoing Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP, has been confirmed as the husband of Sunyani West MP Millicent Amankwah Yeboah.

• The revelation came during Ayariga’s ministerial vetting on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor publicly introduced Yeboah as his wife.

• The couple’s relationship had received little public attention, while political couples such as Charles Bissue and Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor and Ebi Bright previously attracted attention for potentially making parliamentary history.

The Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee at Parliament House in Accra on Thursday, August 27, 2026, for his vetting.

During the proceedings, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor acknowledged members of Ayariga’s family who were present to support him.

After introducing the nominee’s father-in-law and daughter, Ahiafor drew attention to the woman seated behind Ayariga and identified her as his wife.

The revelation prompted smiles and applause from those in attendance, turning what had been a formal vetting session into a more personal moment.

Although Ayariga and Yeboah are both established figures in Ghanaian politics, details of their relationship had not been widely discussed publicly.

Their appearances together in videos shared on social media in recent months had, however, prompted speculation among some members of the public about whether the two MPs were romantically involved.

Ahiafor’s introduction during the vetting provided the clearest public confirmation of their marriage.

Yeboah represents Sunyani West in Parliament, meaning the couple are both serving legislators. Ayariga, meanwhile, is also seeking approval for an executive role as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Ayariga himself made a light-hearted reference to his marriage during the vetting, adding a personal touch to the proceedings.

The public confirmation comes against the backdrop of previous attempts by other political couples to make history as Ghana’s first husband-and-wife team to serve in Parliament simultaneously.

Ahead of the 2024 general elections, attention focused on Charles Bissue and his wife, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, popularly known as ‘The Bissues’.

The couple were tipped to potentially become the first married pair to sit in Ghana’s Parliament at the same time. However, neither succeeded in their respective parliamentary bids.

Bissue, a former secretary to the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), lost his parliamentary election.

Another couple who came close to achieving the feat were South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor and his wife, actor-turned-politician Ebi Bright.

Their marriage became more widely known after Dafeamekpor publicly celebrated Bright’s birthday. When Bright was declared winner of the Tema Central parliamentary seat, it briefly appeared that the couple could make parliamentary history.

That declaration was later overturned, ending the possibility of the Dafeamekpors becoming Ghana’s first husband-and-wife parliamentary duo.

With Ayariga and Yeboah now publicly confirmed as a married couple, however, Ghana’s Parliament already has a husband-and-wife pairing within its current ranks — a fact that had remained largely unknown to the public.
