Mickelson forecasts record score at Baltusrol

There were plenty of birdies early on day three of the US PGA at Baltusrol, prompting Phil Mickelson to say: "I think someone's going to shoot 61 or 62."

Phil Mickelson completed a two-under 68 in his penultimate 18 holes at the US PGA Championship, before suggesting Baltusrol could play host to a record-breaking round this weekend.

Leaders Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb were set to begin their third rounds at 2:55pm local time (7:55pm BST), the latter having on Friday become the third man, after Mickelson and Henrik Stenson, to shoot 63 - equalling the best score in major history - in 2016.

The performances of the early starters on Saturday suggested more low scoring was in prospect, with Padraig Harrington (65), Justin Rose (66) and Charl Schwartzel (66) among those to excel in benign conditions. Francesco Molinari, meanwhile, birdied the last six holes in his 68.

Mickelson, the winner the last time the US PGA was held in Baltusrol, said: "I think someone's going to shoot 61 or 62."

At one under, the left-hander trailed Streb and Walker by eight strokes.

The nearest rivals to the final pairing were world number one Jason Day, the reigning champion, and Emiliano Grillo at seven under. Open winner Henrik Stenson was a shot further back.
