New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens have contrasting wins in NHL pre-season

The New York Rangers have taken down the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in overtime to win their pre-season game at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

The Flyers started well with goals to Mark Streit and Wayne Simmonds and kept the Rangers goalless until the four-minute mark of the third period.

Dan Girardi and Chris Kreider then levelled the scores for the Rangers in the third.

Defenseman Keith Yandle scored the winning goal on a penalty to cap off a superb game with seven shots.

In other games, Arizona and Vancouver fought out a close one at Rogers Arena, as Jared McCann broke the deadlock in a power-play eight minutes into the third to give the Canucks a 1-0 win.

Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom was huge with 32 saves and denied all of the Coyotes' shots on goal.

Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals accounted for the New York Islanders 3-1 in a solid hit-out at Barclays Centre.

Kirill Petrov scored a goal at the 18-minute mark of the third to give the Islanders a slight hope of heading to overtime, but a Karl Alzner wrist shot a minute later stifled any chance of a comeback.

The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 in a dominant display in their home game in Quebec City.

The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 18,259, with many of the Quebecois in attendance booing the Canadiens.

Alexander Semin scored his first goal in a Montreal jersey, with Lars Eller, Brian Flynn and Dale Weise all scoring and capping off a complete performance.

The Red Wings defeated the Bruins 3-1 in Boston, with Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard making 31 saves.

After a goalless first period, Red Wing Drew Miller scored seven minutes into the second, before two more goals put the result beyond doubt.

Loui Eriksson scored the latest of consolation goals at the 19-minute mark of the third to be one of the few shining lights for the Bruins.
