Gender Activists Slams NPP For Rejecting Affirmative Action Policy

Gender activists have expressed disappointment in the New Patriotic Party for scrapping the controversial affirmative action policy.

According to the Vice Chair person of the Conventions Peoples Party, Mrs Susan Adu-Amankwah, the move by the NPP has shown that political parties in Ghana are not serious about the empowerment of women.

On her part, the Executive Director of the Gender Center for Empowering Development, Esther Tawiah speaking to Starr FM said the action by the NPP "clearly tells us that the men in the political parties do not have the political will to do the things and the promises they make to women.

“When they need our votes, they make a lot of promises to us and this is the time we want to see the implementation of such promises; so what is preventing them from going ahead to implementing this policy?” she asked.

The National Council, the 2nd highest decision making body of the NPP concluded to review some controversial decisions of the National Executive Committee regarding the impending parliamentary primaries that have sparked internal party outrage.

The party’s NEC among other things directed that only females must be allowed to contest in areas with sitting female Members of Parliament (MPs) and also only indigenous Gas should  be allowed to contest Ga traditional areas.
