Only six Russian rowers cleared for Rio Olympic Games

The International Rowing Federation (FISA) on Monday revealed that three Russian rowers would not be permitted to compete in the Rio Games amid a doping scandal.

A day later rowing's governing body made a final decision on the fate of athletes from the European nation, announcing that a further 17 did not meet the conditions set out by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Two of the cox will also be prevented from boarding boats in Brazil next month, with Aleksandr Chaukin, Georgy Efremenko, Artem Kosov, Nikita Morgachev, Vladislav Ryabcev and Anton Zarutskiy the only rowers cleared to take to the waters.

Four of the Russian boats will be withdrawn from participating, so teams from two more teams from Italy, one from Australia and another from Greece will replace them.

Russia has the option of forming a men's four team from the six who have been given the green light to compete.

FISA revealed that a decision over Russian entries for the Paralympic Games has not yet been made.
