Wales: Emyr Phillips injury ends Six Nations hopes

Scarlets hooker Emyr Phillips' hopes of making the Wales squad for the Six Nations have been crushed with knee surgery ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

Phillips suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during the Scarlets' 27-25 defeat to Cardiff Blues in the Pro12 on January 1 and had an operation on Wednesday.

After an injury-plagued 2014-15, the 28-year-old – capped three times by Wales – had missed just one match this season, becoming an important part of the table-topping side.

Phillips will play no further part for the Scarlets this season after undergoing a reconstructive operation on his knee.

"Emyr underwent surgery to his knee on Wednesday and will miss the remainder of the current season," said Scarlets' head of medical Andrew Walker.

"His rehab will begin immediately and we would expect to see him back to full fitness during the pre-season."

Walker also confirmed Jack Condy has been ruled out for 14 weeks after undergoing surgery to his shoulder on Friday, joining James Davies, Will Boyde and Josh Macleod on the sidelines.
