Gareth Anscombe scored 18 points as Cardiff Blues kept their hopes of European Champions Cup qualification alive by overcoming local Pro12 rivals Newport Gwent Dragons 28-8 at Cardiff Arms Park.

Anscombe impressed with the boot before scoring a late try as the Blues maintained their hopes of a top-six finish, following up their 21-20 victory earlier in the season to complete the double over their closest neighbours for the first time since 2012-13.

Cardiff now sit one point behind sixth-placed Edinburgh, while the Dragons remain 10th and without a win in their last eight matches in the competition.

Josh Turnbull crashed over the game's first try in the fifth minute and, although Anscombe failed to convert it, his successful penalty put the Blues 8-0 up soon after.

The Cardiff fly-half exchanged penalties with Dorian Jones before Sarel Pretorius crossed for the visitors in the 32nd minute.

Six minutes later, though, Pretroius' fortunes reversed as he was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on and Cardiff took full advantage by adding a second try through Reynold Lee-Lo before half-time.

An Ascombe penalty made it 21-8 early in the second half and he converted his own try following a swift break down the right to complete the scoring at the death.
