Red Sox continue to hit big, Padres halt Cubs

The Boston Red Sox made MLB history as they completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 13-3 win on Wednesday.

Another dominant performance meant the Red Sox recorded at least 13 runs in three consecutive games, which has only happened seven times in over a century.

The Red Sox now have the same record they did in 2013 (21-13) after 34 games, the season Boston went on to win the World Series.

Washington National's right-hander Max Scherzer came back to haunt his former team the Detroit Tigers in a 3-2 win, while the Minnesota Twins lost a seventh straight game after going down 9-2 to the Baltimore Orioles.

The San Diego Padres completed a double-header sweep to take out their three-games series with the Chicago Cubs, winning 7-4 and then 1-0.

Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run home in the 16th inning to give the Houston Astros a 5-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians, the Texas Rangers came from behind again to defeat the Chicago White Sox 6-5, the Colorado Rockies got the better of the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-7 in a thriller and the Seattle Mariners edged the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5.

The San Francisco Giants beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 with a 13th-inning walk-off, the Kansas City Royals got the better of the New York Yankees 7-3, the Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 and the Miami Marlins downed the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-4, while the Los Angeles Angels and the Dodgers went down 5-2 and 4-3 against the St Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets respectively.

SCHERZER ON FIRE

Scherzer became just the fourth pitcher to record 20 strikeouts in a nine-inning game in the Nationals' win over the Tigers. At one point Scherzer recorded nine consecutive outs on strikeouts. He threw 119 pitches on the night - 96 of them strikes with just 23 balls.

ASTROS OUTLAST INDIANS

The Astros' clash against the Indians lasted just over five hours until Gonzalez lined a two-run walk-off home run to right field in the 16th inning for a Houston win.

IANNETTA LEADS MARINERS

Chris Iannetta's homer in the 11th inning not only gave the Mariners a walk-off win but also completed a three-game sweep of the Rays. The American League (AL) West leaders are now 16-5 in their past 21 games.

Meanwhile, Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo's fourth-inning homers gave the Orioles a new franchise record with a three-game streak of back-to-back home runs.

CY YOUNG WINNERS FACE-OFF

A pair of former American League Cy Young Award winners square off at Fenway Park as David Price (4-1, 6.75 ERA) and the Red Sox host reigning winner Dallas Keuchel (2-3, 4.70 ERA) and the Astros on Thursday.
