Great Britain's Brownlee, 28, produced a superb performance in Rio on Thursday, overcoming oppressive heat to retain his title as younger brother Jonny, third in London four years ago, claimed the silver medal.

The elder Brownlee is the first man to win back-to-back Olympic triathlon titles and was asked if he will target a third crown at the next Games.

"I might do 2020," he replied. "I'm not 100 per cent sure.

"I'll see how the body is. I might do some long-distance track."

Alistair Brownlee is renowned for his pace on foot and completed the concluding 10 kilometre run of Thursday's triathlon in 31 minutes and nine seconds.

His personal best for the 10,000 metres is an impressive 28:32.48 – within two minutes of the fastest time recorded by the reigning Olympic champion over the distance, Mo Farah (26:46.57).
