Rio Olympic Games: Marcus Fraser leads at Rio 2016
Marcus Fraser saw his three-shot lead cut to one in the second round of the men's Olympic golf championship in Rio, where Open champion Henrik Stenson looms ominously in third.
Australian Fraser was a surprise overnight leader after carding an opening 63 and his second-round 69 kept him at the summit on 10 under, with Thomas Pieters of Belgium only a stroke behind following an impressive 66.
Stenson – who won his first major at Royal Troon last month – shot 68 to sit just two off the lead, while a stunning 65 from New Zealander Danny Lee gave him an outside shot of glory heading into the weekend.
A torrential early downpour gave way to more forgiving weather on Friday and the leaderboard at the halfway point affords a whole host of players a genuine shot at a medal come Sunday, including the likes of Justin Rose.
But some big names remain off the pace, with American duo Bubba Watson and Patrick Reed six and seven shots off third on the podium respectively.
Compatriot Rickie Fowler is even worse off on plus four.
"Those guys have completely different games and bigger games to what I have but, at the end of the day, we play 72 holes and we hit a certain amount of shots on each hole." - Leader Fraser explains the basics of golf, while modestly downplaying his talents in comparison to Pieters and Stenson.
"I just want to find fairways and find greens. We've seen cold and rainy, and we've seen hot and windy, so we just need to be prepared for anything." - Pieters describes the varying challenges posed by the changing conditions in Rio.
"We've always followed each other on social media. It was really cool he was able to make it, he flies back tonight. It is the first time we have met in person, no better place than here at the Olympics." - Fowler reveals friendship with Hollywood A-lister Matthew McConaughey.
