Fitzpatrick, 27, has spent the past three years playing for Lyon in France, having left New South Wales in 2013.

He returns to Waratahs, for whom he made 22 appearances before departing, ahead of next season.

"Damien returns from France a much-improved player," Waratahs head coach Daryl Gibson said.

"He offers leadership potential and I'm sure he can really add to the team.

"His return increases competition for the hooking spot next season, which will challenge all three players to new heights."

Waratahs missed out on the play-offs this season after winning eight of 15 matches in 2016.
