Ghana gives relief items, $1million cash to Sierra Leone

The move was part of Ghana's contribution to support the West Africa country that was hit by a mudslide disaster killing over 400 people.

Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia has on behalf of the Ghana Government presented assorted relief items and cast worth $1million to the government of Sierra Leone.

In a series of tweets Sunday morning, the Vice President said: "On Saturday I, on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, presented assorted relief items and cash worth a total of $1million to the government and people of Sierra Leone in the wake of the flooding disaster that struck the country a few days ago."

He also announced the deployment of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials to assist with ongoing rescue mission.

"National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials are also on the ground to provide assistance and train Sierra Leonian officials on disaster management," he said.

"We stand with the people of Sierra Leone in these trying times," he added.

The Minority on Friday decried the reaction of the government, saying it was "poor, slow and uninspiring."

Minority spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the government of “feet dragging,” adding that it was “unimpressive and inconsistent” with Ghana’s proud history of supporting countries in times of distress.
