Fast bowler Hardus Viljoen has been called up to the South Africa squad as cover for Kyle Abbott ahead of the second Test against England.

Abbott suffered tightness in his left hamstring after the Proteas' crushing 241-run defeat to Alastair Cook's side in the opening Test at Kingsmead.

And Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed on Thursday that in-form Highveld Lions seamer Viljoen, who is uncapped at senior international level, has joined up with the squad before the second match begins at Newlands on Saturday.

CSA convener of selectors Linda Zondi said: "With a short turnaround between the first and second tests, we've included Hardus in the squad as a precautionary measure to cover all our bases.

"Hardus has taken 20 wickets in the first two rounds of the Sunfoil Series."

Viljoen's arrival in Cape Town comes 24 hours after South Africa also called up uncapped all-rounder Chris Morris and wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock for the second Test.

De Kock is likely to take the wicketkeeping gloves from AB de Villiers, while Morris provides extra cover should leading bowler Dale Steyn fail to recover from a shoulder injury picked up in Durban.
