Jhonattan Vegas lit up the Barbasol Championship at the RTJ Trail Golf Course on Friday, but fell agonisingly short of a 59 in Alabama.

The Venezuelan, who started at the 10th hole, started with two pars before going eight under from holes 12 to 17, a run that included an eagle and a hole in one.

However, his round cooled slightly at the turn as his next eight holes saw him go one under, before birdies at his last two holes saw him sign for an 11-under 60.

Jim Furyk was the last person to fire a 59 on the PGA Tour when he did it at the BMW Championship in 2013. Stuart Appleby, Chip Beck, Paul Goydos, David Duval and Al Geiberger are the others.

Vegas finished his round with a six-shot lead over Hudson Swafford as he tries to win the PGA Tour event running adjacent to The Open at Royal Troon.
