Despite shining in last year's Vuelta a Espana, Tom Dumoulin will not return with Giant - Alpecin after being left out of their line-up.

Giant - Alpecin have announced their line-up for the Vuelta a Espana, and Tom Dumoulin is not included.

Dumoulin was representing the team when he led the Vuelta into the final two stages of the 2015 edition, though he ended up finishing sixth in the general classification - his best Grand Tour finish.

The Dutchman picked up a stage win at this year's Giro d'Italia - where he briefly sported the pink jersey - and added a further two at the Tour de France before pulling out with a fractured wrist.

Despite the injury Dumoulin still participated at Rio 2016, claiming silver in the individual men's time trial as Fabian Cancellara took gold by 47 seconds.

The 25-year-old was not named in Giant-Alpecin's line-up, but coach Luke Roberts insists they will continue to focus on individual stage wins.

"Our objective will be on stage results. Firstly in the sprints where there should be plenty of opportunities for a fast finish during the three weeks," said Roberts in a statement.

"In parallel, we will apply an offensive strategy when the stages become more difficult to target results from the breakaways.

"Finally with Warren [Barguil, making his third Vuelta appearance], we will see how the race evolves to give him the best chances for stage success."

The Vuelta begins on with a 29.4 kilometre team time trial in the province of Ourense on August 20.
