Wakefield hammer Wigan in Super League

Jacob Miller scored a hat-trick as in-form Wakefield Trinity Wildcats dished out a harrowing 62-0 thrashing to depleted Wigan Warriors, who suffered their biggest defeat in 11 years in an astonishing Super League encounter at Belle Vue on Sunday.

The Warriors were missing a host of key players, including captain Sean O'Loughlin, due to injury and illness, which led to training being cancelled on Wednesday and Thursday.

Wigan head coach Shaun Wane said he would see what his players are made of in West Yorkshire and he was in for unpleasant surprise, as ruthless Wakefield ran in 11 to stretch their winning run to four games under Chris Chester.

Australian stand-off Miller crossed twice in a first half, which also saw Nick Scruton and Tom Johnstone touch down to leave shell-shocked Wigan 22-0 down at the break.

Things went from bad to worse for the Warriors after the interval, with Miller completing his hat-trick before Scruton scored his second try and captain Danny Kirmond helped himself to a double.

A youthful Wigan side had no answer to Wakefield and sit fourth in the table after back-to-back defeats, leaving Wane counting on the return of influential senior players to get them back on track.

Denny Solomona was the star of the show as Castleford Tigers fought back from 18-10 down to beat Widnes Vikings 34-24 at Select Security Stadium.

Widnes looked set to end a run of three consecutive defeats when tries from Patrick Ah Van, Macgraff Leuluai and Corey Thompson put them in command in the first half.

But Solomona touched down twice before the break and completed his hat-trick soon after the interval, with Ryan Boyle, Luke Gale and Paul McShane adding further tries to give Cas a third win in their last four matches.
