Flavia Pennetta thrilled to record first WTA Finals win

Flavia Pennetta was delighted to have kept her WTA Finals campaign alive as she brushed aside Agnieszka Radwanska in Singapore.

After losing to Simona Halep in her opening match of the tournament, Pennetta needed to win to avoid an early exit from the end-of-season tournament, and that duly arrived as she triumped 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

Pennetta battled her way back into the opening set with some well-judged groundstrokes, before her backhand came to the fore to seal her win " the Italian hitting 10 in the match.

Her second-set surge took the wind out of Radwanska's performance, something Pennetta was intent on doing to get that all important win.

"I tried to be really focused, tried to hit the ball hard, be aggressive and not give her too much time to do her job," Pennetta said.

"I mean, she plays unbelievable, she can let you run for hours all over the court, so you need to be really aggressive with her.

"My serve helped me a lot today and helped me play the way I did today. Of course the key was to be really near to the baseline, not to give up much of the court and take advantage."
