Parents whose wards have gained admission to the Presbyterian Senior High School in La, Accra are being asked to pay fees for desks or their children may have to stand during lessons.

Authorities at the school said that most of their desks have broken down and the government is yet to provide them with new ones.

“We are not asking students to pay anything, we are only asking parents to make voluntary contribution to repair broken down desks before classes start,” the headmaster of the school, Samuel Salamat told Accra-based Starr FM.

He argued that the free SHS policy should not stop parents from contributing to the welfare of schools.

“The free SHS policy is not against parents making contribution provided it is not compulsory,” he said.

Parents who are registering their wards have also been asked to pay 80 Ghana Cedis and 48 Ghana cedis for dusters and other utility fees.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday officially launched the Free SHS policy at the West African Secondary School (WASS).

Per the policy, all fees approved by the Ghana Education Service Council for first-year students have been absorbed by the government, except dues from the Parent Teachers' Association.

But what are the fees being absorbed by the government, and how much is going to be paid for each student?
