The Italian woman has married herself in a complete ceremony with a white dress, three-layer wedding cake, bridesmaids and 70 guests.

One might be wondering what change is marrying oneself going to make in the life of a single woman, but Ms. Laura said "I firmly believe that each of us must first of all love ourselves,"

Though such a marriage does not have any legal backing, the fitness trainer believes “You can have a fairytale even without the prince."

Ms. Mesi is not the first woman to have married herself. Christened "sologamy", the trend of self-marriage is a gradually developing one in some other countries across the globe.

Some proponents of the solo marriage say it portrays self-love and acceptance, as well as the social affirmation normally reserved for properly wedded couples.

She told La Repubblica newspaper that, "I told friends and family that if I had not found my soul-mate by my 40th birthday I would marry myself.

"If one day I find a man with whom I can plan a future I'll be happy, but my happiness does not depend on him."

Meanwhile, in May, a man by name Nello Ruggiero, married himself in a similar fashion.

Apparently, self-marriage has been going on since 1993, but as expected, Laura Messi has been at the receiving end of criticisms with some critics saying the entire ceremony was a much ado about nothing.

She admitted how difficult it is to marry oneself, saying you need "a pinch of madness" to do it.

However, she has called the bluff of her critics as she said: "nothing and no-one can turn off my smile."
