Atomic Junction gas explosion under control, Police say, after recording fatalities

About 200 police officers and 12 fire tenders were deployed to douse the fire which stated around 7:30pm at a Goil filing station and spread to a Total petrol station across the street at Atomic Junction.

“Currently, we want to say that the situation is under control,” the Director General of Police Operations, Dr. Akuffo Dampare in a radio interview with Accra based Citi FM.

He continued: “The fire service is on the ground fighting the fire.

“The Police is in position trying to cordon off. We have also ensured road diversion.

“As it stands now, the situation is under control so we want to urge everyone to calm down.

“So far, we’ve been able to do our best to control the situation, and the fire service is also doing their best to control the situation…

“All the ambulances here are on standby, and there is nothing so far that has warranted their immediate use,” he said.

Government has confirmed that some fatalities have been recorded but stayed away from putting out figures.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a Deputy Minister of Communications, said: "Unfortunately there are some fatalities and we are working to have the numbers. There are quite a number also injured."

"A number of injured persons have been taken to a number of medical facilities," he added.
