ECOWAS leaders will converge in Abuja today, Saturday, December 17 to deliberate on future of Gambia's Yahya Jammeh.

Early this week, Anglophone West Africa leaders from Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria held mediation talks Jammeh, who initially conceded defeat in a December 1 presidential poll and later disputed it.

Adama Barrow was declared the winner of the presidential race and even received a call from Jammeh conceding defeat and pledging his support to the president-elect.

His concession stunned the world, and many Gambians took to the street to celebrate what they call "emancipation day."

Little success was achieved at the mediation talk with Jammeh who has, in his latest antics, lodge a Supreme Court case to challenge the result.

Multiple media reports in Nigeria said Jammeh was told by the mediation team to respect the result of the December 1 election which he had earlier accepted.

Francophone West Africa regional power, Senegal has threatened to intervene militarily if Jammeh fails to leave office.

The opposition in Gambia fears Jammeh will use a judicial system -- considered by experts to lack independence -- to give legitimacy to his attempt to hang on to power.
