Sack 'incompetent' Agric Minister - Concerned farmers tell Akufo-Addo

Speaking on Accra FM, he said: "For us the farmers we think the president must sack his minister, Dr Afryie. The minister does not consult stakeholders before taking decisions for the agric sector.”

The group claims Dr. Akoto's actionS since he took charge of the ministry have been to the detriment of the sector.

The group said a decision by the minister to cut down some cocoa trees for the set up of a rubber factory was a bad decision that has the potential of affecting the cocoa industry.

However, in his defence, Dr. Akoto has said: "the destruction of the cocoa farms by the Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) in the Eastern and Western regions, represents a “tiny” fraction of such farms in the country."

But the group is not taking the explanation lightly as they believe the minister should take his actions after engaging in broader consultations.

Nana Opambuor also said, "It appears the government wants to neglect the cocoa sector to focus on cashew. This is very bad for the economy.”
