Death toll now rises to four

The heavy rains in Tamale on Tuesday left several suburbs of the metropolis submerged.

The death toll now stands at four.

According to the police, an eight-year-old girl of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Primary School was swept away when she stepped out to urinate in a drain behind her school.

The body of Sulemana Hamran, a 13-year-old pupil of the Bethel Methodist Primary School at Tishigu was also found at a dam site at Fuo.

A woman, identified as Hajia Fati Bapuni, was on her way to pick her child from school when she died.

The woman passed away after being swept away by the strong current of the floods on her arrival at the Gariba Lodge Main Gutter area.

The identity of the fourth person is yet to be established.

The Tamale Teaching Hospital was also flooded as a result.

The three-hour downpour also caused flooding in other parts of the metropolis. Areas affected were Kanvili- Tunayili, Gumani, Kunyavilli.

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, during a tour of the affected areas on Wednesday expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their relatives in the deceased.

He also assured that the government would address the perennial flooding in the metropolis.
