John Mahama tasks Special Prosecutor to investigate corruption in current gov't

The former president made the call in Kenya where he has been over the past few days for a series of talks and meetings with key individuals in that country's private sector.

Former President John Mahama has tasked whoever is appointed as the Special Prosecutor to be courageous enough to prosecute cases of corruption within the current government.

He tweeted the call on his official Twitter account: The independent prosecutor in [Ghana] must be independent enough and prosecute cases even if from within this [administration].

John Mahama’s successor, President Nana Akufo-Addo, made the creation of the office of a special prosecutor – whose primary responsibility would be to investigate corruption- a key campaign promise ahead of the December 2016 elections.

Sources close to the presidency say lawyer Akoto Ampaw is set to be named for the position in a few days.

Analysis

Critics says Akoto Ampaw is too close to the president and would find it difficult to investigate and prosecute cases of corruption under the current administration.

That is because Ampaw is a friend of the president and was part of the team of lawyers that represented the president in the 2012 election petition case.

There are also fears within the National Democratic Congress that the Special Prosecutor would be used by the new government to target members of the John Mahama administration - which was fraught with numerous corruption scandals. The scandals included the bus branding saga, Ford car gift brouhaha and numerous sole source contracts.
