Joseph Agbeko disappointed in GBA for calling him 'fraudster'

The former IBF Bantamweight champion says he feels betrayed by words of GBA president Peter Zwenners.

Agbeko was scheduled to fight Kenya’s Nick Otieno on June 9 at the Bukom Boxing Arena, however, the bout was called off following misunderstandings involving stakeholders.

The boxer was subsequently accused of trying to organise the fight on the blind side of the GBA, with Peter Zwenners referring to him as a “fraudulent boxer”.

In an interview with Accra-based Happy FM, the GBA president said: “Agbeko for the past four years has been engaging in fraudulent conducts; he doesn’t have money to promote fights and he doesn’t have money to pay boxers but he wants to promote fights.”

However, the three-time world champion has taken exception to those claims, insisting he is very disappointed in the utterances coming from the GBA boss.

In a statement released on July 10, Agbeko lamented the way the GBA handled the whole issue, while warning that such actions will only hinder the progress of the sport.

“Mr Peter Zwennes, as the president of the authority that manages the sport of boxing in Ghana, is someone I respect greatly. Hence I was extremely disappointed by the things he said about me. For president of the Ghana Boxing Authority I think he went too far with those allegations,” sections of the statement read.

“Everything Mr Zwennes said does not only kill a career but kills your spirit and your entire business life. Ghana Boxing Authority was established because there are boxers who risk their life every time they step into the ring, so it is our duty as a boxing fraternity to protect the boxers and their image or brand to make the sport more attractive for sponsorships.

“The sport itself is struggling due to lack of support from corporate Ghana and Mr. Zwennes' actions will only deteriorate the reality.”

He also revealed that he might take legal action against the GBA, adding that “I've discussed this case with my lawyer and I'm waiting on his advice.
