GFA forced to appoint Kwesi Appiah as coach?

It has been claimed that Kwesi Appiah was imposed on the GFA to be selected as Black Stars coach.

The 57-year-old returned as Ghana coach for the second time when he was chosen to replace Avram Grant after Ghana’s failed attempt to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier in January.

The appointment of the former Al Khartoum boss, though, has divided opinion among Ghanaians, with some suggesting he is not cut out for the job.

Appiah was first named as Black Stars coach in 2012, but was fired after Ghana’s disastrous showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

However, the GFA handed him a second chance by reappointing him to the role in April this year.

But despite it already being five months since Appiah was handed the job, the Ghana FA has been accused of being forced to make him Ghana coach.

According to Sly Senyo – a Ghanaian football enthusiast and an ardent follower of the Black Stars – the GFA would not have appointed Appiah, but for the pressure from certain forces.

Speaking as a guest on Adom TV’s Fire for Fire show, Mr Senyo made a series of revelations, while also alleging that GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi openly confessed to him about being forced to make Appiah Black Stars coach.

“There was a time I visited Kwesi Nyamtakyi at home, which was after Ghana had played Zambia [in a World Cup qualifier in 2013]. And the first thing he said was that ‘Kwesi Appiah cannot do this job’,” he revealed.

“Nyantakyi admitted it to my face that Appiah cannot manage the Black Stars but there were forces that insisted the FA gave the job to him.”

He went on to suggest that Appiah is not the right man to manage the Black Stars, claiming the FA should have looked farther for a more experienced tactical head.

According to him, it’s high time the country’s football governing body prioritized hiring “quality” coaches rather than opting for “cheap and affordable” options.
