Has the GFA President really sacked his Vice George Afriyie?

Pulse Sports’ Thomas Freeman Yeboah investigates the alleged bad blood between Kwesi Nyantakyi and his deputy George Afriyie

It is well known that the President of the Ghana Football Association and his Vice President have had issues of trust for some time now.

And last year J.Y Appiah, the former chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) served as an arbiter to settle a misunderstanding between the two parties, after reports claimed Nyanyakyi had accused his lieutenant of aligning himself with Nii Lantey Vanderpuye who was then Minister for Youth and Sports and an arch nemesis of Nyantakyi

Sportsobama.com has reported that Nyantakyi announced on Tuesday in an Emergency Committee meeting that he couldn’t continue to work with Afriyie any longer over trust issues. The latter, after hearing the news, reportedly responded that the former should ‘’keep your FA’’ for all he cares. Afriyie further accused Nyantakyi of greed.

Further checks indicate that there is a leaked tape of George Afriyie having reiterated his belief of Nyantakyi’s alleged avarice while also accusing him of not being transparent with regards to the sponsorship monies.

It is understood that it was this accusation that influenced Nyantakyi to sack his second-in-command, a decision he is expected to announce at an Executive Committee meeting.

However, Pulse Sports in an attempt to get a confirmation from the camp of the Vice President of the Ghana Football Association has been told that those reports are false.

The source close to George Afriyie said the GFA Vice President is still at post, but did confirm that there was a heated exchange of words between Afriyie and Nyantakyi when the Black Stars travelled to the United States for friendlies against Mexico and the USA. This spat was apparently over botched up travel plans that saw Black Stars team captain Asamaoh Gyan paying the airfares of some players of the team when they were travelling from Houston to Hartford for the USA game. Afriyie also doubles as chairman of the Black Stars management committee.

The source further disclosed that Afriyie wasn’t in the country on Tuesday when the said Emergency Committee meeting at the GFA secretariat allegedly took place as reported by Sportsobama.com.

He added that Afriyie hasn’t received any communication of his alleged firing.
