Electoral violence is fast becoming a dangerous stain on Ghana’s democratic record. Once seen as isolated incidents, violent disruptions are now a recurring feature of our elections. The question remains: how do we confront this growing canker before it weakens our democracy beyond repair?

Du Toit is alleged to have turned violent after discovering that Peters was romantically involved with a young 22-year-old rugby player.

Days before the attack, Du Toit, who is also the coach of Macassar Rugby B-team, allegedly threatened to shoot both Peters and her new lover.

Before the shooting the policeman had left behind suicide letters explaining his actions. His twin brother Neil Du Toit said "his brother was under immense stress and that he apologized for dying in such a cowardly manner."

The officer was buried at the Sidney Kuhn Hall, next to the Macassar police station where he worked.
