The Black Starlets 0-1 loss against their Malian counterparts on Sunday in the Africa U-17 Nations Cup meant they couldn’t make history as the first nation to win the championship on three occasions.
Ghana were the first country to win the competition since the introduction of the tournament system in 1995 and they made two in 1999, but have been outsiders since that time. The closest they have come to winning the tourney was finishing runners-up to Gambia in 2005.
The Black Starlets after an impressive start to the 2017 Africa U-17 Nations Cup campaign, having bagged nine goals in two matches were highly tipped to win the tournament, but they got out of gas in latter part, as they failed to score in their last three games.

Before the final Ghana, Gambia and Nigeria had won the championship twice each and Ghana would have made it three times, if they had beaten the Malians.
Mali, however, set a new record as the first nation to defend the tournament since its inception in 1995.
