Government will from 2017 no longer bond nurses trained in public health training facilities, Health minister Alex Segbefia has said.

According to him the decision to abolish the bonding and allowance system follows concerns from the  International Monetary Fund (IMF) about the public wage bill.

Mr. Segbefia was speaking at Ho in the Volta region during the upgrading of the Volta region hospital to a Teaching Hospital.

The Coalition of Unemployed Private Nurses have often complained that government is deliberately refusing private trained nurses from being posted, as only bonded nurses from nursing training colleges are currently being posted.

Hundreds of  the aggrieved private nurses who have not been posted since 2013 picketed at Ghana’s seat of Government - Flagstaff House on Thursday, May 5, 2016 over the matter.
