Manchester United new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic denied
English Premier League champions Leicester City took on FA Cup winners Manchester United in the Community Shield at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The game which was Jose Mourinho’s first competitive game since taking charge of the Old Trafford club saw three goals scored and all 12 substitutes used as Manchester United and Leicester City battled it out for the bragging rights ahead of the Premier League campaign.
The Red Devils started the game on the high with plenty of possession as Leicester City struggled to find their rhythm. The Premier League champions did finally come into the game but it was Jose Mourinho’s team who took the lead in the first half of the game.
Jesse Lingard who scored the winning goal for Manchester United to lift FA Cup at Wembley at the end of last season made a superb run with the ball from midfield to slot in the first goal of the Community Shield game.
A mistake from Marouane Fellaini whose misplaced back pass was intercepted by Jamie Vardy saw Claudio Ranieri’s men come back into the game with an equalizer from Leicester City’s top scorer for last season.
The game was there for the winning by both teams but it was Manchester United who nicked the winning goal with seven minutes to the end of regular time.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic got to the end of an Antonio Valencia cross beating Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel at the far end of the post to hand Manchester United a 2-1 win.
Jeffrey Schlupp who was introduced into the game ten minutes to full time made a surging run to help his team take the game to penalties in the final minutes but his cross was blocked for a corner kick.
Ghanaian player Daniel Amartey was not used in the game against Manchester United.
