The suspended chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko will not attend the 15th extraordinary national delegatesâ conference of the party.
His spokesperson, Nana Yaw Osei said his boss was not invited to attend the event, hence, his decision not to be present.
âMr Afoko wonât be in Sunyani. What for? Why should he be there?â he asked, adding that âitâs not a conference for all party members, itâs a conference for delegates and accredited persons so if he has not been invited to attend any conference anywhere and more so, when he has said that the people organizing the conference donât have the constitutional mandate to do so, so he will not go.â
The delegates of Ghanaâs largest opposition party will today gather in Sunyani for their national conference.
The event will be addressed by the partyâs flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other leading members.
Prior to this conference, Mr. Afoko filed an application seeking an injunction but an Accra High court dismissed application which was aimed at stopping the conference from taking place.
According to Afokoâs spokesperson however, the dismissal of the injunction was victory for Afoko.
Speaking on Radio Ghanaâs Behind the News programme on Friday, Mr Osei said: âWhat transpired in court has given Mr. Afoko what he wanted.â
He insisted that the conference was to endorse his bossâ suspension but since the leadership of the party who were present in court gave the assurance that no issue concerning Mr Afoko will be discussed at the event was victory.
The NPP leadership has indicated that all suspended members are allowed to partake in any event organized by the party because their suspension does not mean expulsion.
But Mr. Osei insists the NPP is not really looking to unite its front.
âIs the party looking for unity? We have all be saying that unity is good for us as to whether we are prepared to achieve it is another question because it is not all of us who want unity otherwise, a lot of the things that are happening should not be happening,â he said.
