Ghana, Nigeria, the Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone participated in the WAEC examination.
Master Pius Kyere of the St James Seminary at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region was adjudged the Overall Best Student in the 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
This year, three students performed exceptionally well.
Master Pius Kyere was honoured along with two other Senior High School (SHS) graduates — Master Benjamin Bortey Sango from Accra Academy, and Master Richmond Kwame Mensah from the St James Seminary in Sunyani.
Master Bortey Sango received the prize for the third best student in West Africa, as well as the second best student in Ghana, while Master Mensah was rewarded for being the third best student in Ghana.

The three were presented with cash prizes, plaques and certificates.
They received 300 dollars, 400 dollars and 500 dollars from the WAEC Fund and the Ghana National office, WAEC, respectively and plaques for their schools.

In the year 2016, Ghana received all the three prizes at the WAEC Excellence Awards, with all the three awardees being former students of the Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast.
They are Ms Jessica Ayeley Quaye, Ms Ruth Ewura-Ama Awadzi and Ms Danielle Amo-Mensah.
