A mum was caught stealing cake mix, shortening, and some frosting from a discount shop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

When officer Michael Kotsonis tracked down the woman at her home, he learned that she had been taking the items to make a birthday cake for her child.

Instead of arresting her, Kotsonis did something incredible – he paid for her shopping. Metro UK reported.

‘I didn’t do it for the attention,’ he told the Portsmouth Herald.

'It was a shop worker at Ocean State Job Lots who called the local paper.'

Kotsonis played down his kindness, saying it was something his fellow officers ‘do all the time’.

‘It doesn’t make it right,’ he said of the woman’s stealing, ‘but the kid shouldn’t have to pay.’
