40-yr-old man to die by hanging for killing 6-yr-old girl he tried to rape

A 40-year-old man who murdered a 6-year-old girl he attempted to rape has been sentenced to death.

A 40-year-old man, Ibrahim Idris, has been handed a death sentence by hanging by a Bauchi State High Court, for murdering a 6-year-old girl he tried to rape.

The court presided over by Justice Yelim Bogoro, found him guilty in the September 12, 2012, murder of little Asiya Mohammed after she scream when he wanted to rape her. Idris was said to have used an axe and a kitchen knife to sever the girl's head, put it in a polythene bag and dumped it in a canal.

The prosecution led by the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Dawud Yakubu, was able to convince the court that on the said date, Idris had lured the victim into his room with the intention to rape her but when she screamed, he murdered her.

Yakubu presented the axe and knife Idris used in the murder and a copy of his voluntary confessional statement as exhibits and the court was convinced beyond any doubt.

In sentencing him, Justice Bogoro said:

“I, hereby, sentence you to death by hanging, but you have the right to appeal within 30 days.”
